14 Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. 15 See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled; 16 that no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal. 17 For you know that afterward, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no chance to repent, though he sought it with tears. –Hebrews 12:14-17
There should always be passion and concern for unbelievers. The author encouraged Jewish believers to be on guard for false teachings and to reach out to the unsaved Jews with a message of hope from Christ. The message was not just for the unbelievers but also for those who were beside them. There was/is a great urge to lead astray children of God, not only for those who face persecution but also for those being tempted.
As we read the letters in the New Testaments, there is a problematic challenge for true believers to separate from false teachers. It can be difficult to dismiss a person you have grown close with, but before you try and challenge their theology. The first step is to “strive for peace” and seek patience and gentleness with each person. Paul wrote to Timothy, “Perhaps God will grant them repentance leading them to the knowledge of the truth” -2 Timothy 2:25

- How can you tell that someone is teaching a false doctrine?
- How can you decide when you should separate away from them?
