How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Blessed are you, O Lord; teach me your statutes! With my lips I declare all the rules of your mouth. In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches. I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.-Psalm 119: 9-16
To fulfill God’s ideal plan, we must approach Him with child-like faith. When we do, His will is evident throughout our lives. The Hebrew word for “young man” in verse 9 refers to a boy from infancy to adolescence. So, the second stanza in this Psalm emphasizes the importance of nurturing children early in life.
Timothy’s mother, Eunice, took Psalm 119 very seriously. Though she was married to a Gentil (Acts 16:1), she had a strong faith in God (2 Timothy 1:5) and a commitment to teaching young Timothy the Old Testament. Paul understood Timothy’s heritage in his final letter, and we receive a new perspective on Psalm 119:9-11:
But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:14-17
